Safely Remove Bonded Contamination and Restore Smooth Paint

ValetPRO Contamination Removal Bars are professional clay bars that lift embedded contaminants from your vehicle’s paint surface — things like industrial fallout, rail dust, tar spots, tree sap and bonded traffic film that normal washing alone cannot remove.

It’s worth noting that this contamination is often invisible to the eye. You can feel the roughness when you run your hand over the paint, but you can’t usually see it. These microscopic particles act like a filter on the paint surface, reducing its reflective quality and dulling the gloss and shine.

By using a contamination removal bar (clay bar) to lift this bonded layer away, you’ll often notice an immediate improvement in the smoothness and appearance of the paint. The real transformation happens once you apply wax, sealant or ceramic coating. With a fully clean surface and nothing interfering with light reflection, the paint truly shines with deeper colour and higher gloss.

A clean, decontaminated surface also allows waxes, sealants and ceramic coatings to bond more effectively to the paint, which significantly extends the duration of protection. When you combine a clay bar process with paint correction, your paintwork can look its absolute best.

New to clay bars? Start with the Yellow (Medium) bar. Try it first with a clay lube like ValetPRO Clay Rider, then experiment using just water. You’ll quickly notice the difference in performance and pick-up rate.

When you want faster results and are set up for paint correction, move on to the Blue (Heavy) bar. You’ll see just how quickly it removes heavy contamination and why it becomes a core part of any full detail process.

The Orange (Mild) bar is the safest choice for regular maintenance — perfect for your garage queen or beloved daily driver. It adds a little extra time to your regular cleaning routine, but it helps maintain the beautiful finish you work so hard to achieve.

As the bar glides over the paint, these bonded particles stick to the clay and are pulled away, leaving the surface perfectly smooth and ready for polishing, waxing, sealing or ceramic coating. If your paint feels rough after a wash, a contamination removal bar will make a noticeable difference.

We offer three carefully graded bars so you can choose the right level of aggression for the job.

Blue – Heavy Grade (Most Aggressive) This is our most aggressive contamination removal bar and the fastest, most effective option for removing heavy bonded contamination. It uses a traditional clay formulation, making it ideal for full paint correction jobs.

You can also use the Blue bar for paint enhancement details, but because it works so powerfully it is likely to leave light marring on the paint surface. A single-stage mild polish or compound will easily remove this. For this reason, reserve the Blue bar for jobs where you plan at least one stage of polishing afterwards.

The upside is speed — it removes contamination quicker than milder bars. Always use with a dedicated clay lubricant such as ValetPRO Clay Rider. If the idea of any marring makes you nervous, choose our Yellow bar instead.

Yellow – Medium Grade (Versatile & Innovative) ValetPRO has changed the rules with our Yellow contamination removal bar. It features a completely different rubber-like consistency that gives excellent “tack” for picking up contaminants while remaining remarkably smooth and gentle on the paint surface.

It’s perfect for enhancement details where you want a quick lift to the paintwork without the extra polishing step. Ideal before applying a sealant or wax.

You can use the Yellow bar with plain water (for maximum effectiveness and faster pick-up rate) or with clay lube. Water makes it more aggressive — skilled detailers can use it without marring, but you must regularly check the bar and fold it to expose a clean surface. Using ValetPRO Clay Rider adds a protective barrier that reduces direct contact, making it slightly less effective but guaranteeing no marring. This makes it excellent for safe maintenance detailing too.

Orange – Mild Grade (Gentlest) The Orange contamination removal bar is the safest and gentlest option in the range. It is the perfect choice for regular maintenance and light contamination, such as small tar spots that build up around wheel arches.

It helps prevent ceramic coatings from becoming clogged and preserves existing wax or sealant layers better than more aggressive bars. Like the Yellow bar, you can use it with water (more effective) or with a clay lube like Clay Rider (safer but slightly less aggressive).

Directions for Use (How to use a Clay Bar)

For All Contamination Removal Bars (Blue, Yellow & Orange):

  1. Split the 100g bar in half and keep the unused portion in its packaging.
  2. Knead the bar in your hands to warm and soften it.
  3. Flatten into a disc shape.
  4. Spray your chosen lubricant (Clay Rider for Blue/Yellow, or water for Yellow/Orange) generously on a small section (approx. 1 sq ft).
  5. Glide the bar back and forth in straight lines with light pressure. Add more lubricant if it starts to drag.
  6. Frequently inspect the bar and fold it inwards to expose a fresh, clean surface.
  7. Repeat across the vehicle until complete.

Pro Tip: Always use plenty of lubricant or water to ensure a smooth glide and prevent sticking. Never use a dry bar.

The Joy of Detailing

There’s real satisfaction in running your hand across freshly decontaminated paint and feeling that glass-smooth, contaminant-free surface. Choosing the right ValetPRO Contamination Removal Bar turns this essential step into a rewarding part of the process — giving you confidence that the paint is perfectly prepared for the next stage, whether it’s a quick wax or a full correction.

Important Note Using the Blue clay bar (contamination removal bar) will usually require some level of paint correction or polishing afterwards to remove minor marring and restore maximum gloss. Always work on a cool, clean surface and test in an inconspicuous area first.
