Looking After Your Pressure Washer

simple steps to maintain and keep your pressure washer working at its best!

When maintaining your pressure washer, the two key components that need attention are:

  • Pump
  • Hose

1. Pump

You may have noticed that when you first turn on the pressure washer, the water can take some time to flow consistently as any air pockets in the hose work their way through. If you run the pump during this time, you risk damaging it. Pumps are designed to move fluids, not air. To avoid this, keep your pressure washer turned off while you pull the trigger and let the water flow. You may need to do this for a minute or so to remove any air pockets in the hose. Once the water is flowing consistently, you’re ready to start using the pressure washer.

After you’ve finished using the pressure washer, remember that the pump will hold some liquid under pressure. If you don’t release this pressure, it can put stress on the pump before your next use. Once you’re done, turn off the machine and then pull the trigger to release the pressure.

2. Hose

The hose will wear over time, especially as you drag it around the car, which can be abrasive. To extend the life of your hose, avoid placing weight on it and ensure it’s rolled up neatly after use. Avoid pulling it around the car and be careful not to create any kinks. While pulling the hose around the car can be challenging, there are now tools that enable you to move the hose freely. Here is an example.

Key Considerations

These are the key areas to look after. When choosing a pressure washer, the most important factor is ensuring that spare parts are readily available. The AVA pressure washer, a Norwegian-designed product, is a great domestic pressure washer offering good value and a list of replaceable parts. If your budget allows, consider a professional-level machine like a Kranzle pressure washer, available in a variety of models, all of which are excellent.
